The Doncaster P2 Locomotive Trust, who are raising funds to build the Gresley P2 2-8-2 express locomotive "Cock of the North", had a day out courtesy of the Appleby-Frodingham Railway Preservation Society. The AFRPS operates an extensive steam and diesel service using the trackwork around the Scunthorpe Steel Works. This represents a remarkable partnership with British Steel, the new owners of the steelworks. The fact that a huge company like British Steel entrusts a society of volunteers in this way is, I suspect, unique in the world of railway preservation. The AFRPS occupies a depot, within the steelworks, where they are rebuilding a number of steam and diesel locomotives. On our tour, featured here, we were hauled alternatively by "Cranford" an 0-6-0 steam tank locomotive built by Avonside in Bristol and No.1, an 0-6-0 Rolls Royce powered centre cab diesel shunter built by The Yorkshire Engine Company in Sheffield. Coaches are one cab car and a centre car taken from a BR three car diesel multiple unit. The centre car has had its corridor connection removed and replaced with windows. There is a standard BR brake van completing the train and most of my shots are taken from this brake van.
