Phillip Sear plays two connected pieces from a late suite by the British composer Frederic Mullen (aka Gustave Lind)

This suite is actually by the gifted British composer (Alfred) Frederic Mullen (1868-1936). Appraisal of his work is obscured by his use of pseudonyms - for example: Jean Morel , Gustave Lind - as in this work - and Pierre Lescaut.  I have put these two pieces together in this video, as the introduction to the second is effectively a segue from the first.  Maybe these pieces are fading blooms - appearing, as they did, at the beginning of the jazz age, but they have considerable charm nevertheless.

'The Heart of the Sunset' is the title of a 1915 Western novel by Rex Beach, made into a silent movie in 1918 (the novel's original cover is shown on the thumbnail).  Lind's piece is preceded by a quotation from 'The Hermit' by the Scottish poet James Beattie (1735-1803) - the continuation in square brackets is not in the score:

"At the close of the day when the hamlet is still, and mortals the sweets of forgetfulness prove, [when naught but the torrent is heard on the hill, and naught but the nightingale's song in the grove.]"


'Chant Poetique' is headed by a quotation from  'To the Memory of My Beloved the Author, Mr. William Shakespeare' by the English poet Ben Jonson (1572-1637):

"For a good poet's made, as well as born; "
