The red-eared slider is the most popular pet turtle in the United States, originating from the southern states. This turtle species has been released in the wild elsewhere in the country, becoming an invasive species in places like California. In this video I show a cesspool in San Diego, California with a single red-eared slider turtle swimming around that I had not seen before. The red-eared slider gets its "slider" moniker by its ability to slide off rocks into the water at very fast speeds. This turtle species is popular worldwide and has been released or escaped into the wild in many different countries, becoming a pest. The red-eared slider is aquatic as it needs to eat in water to compensate for its lack of saliva and a fixed tongue. Red-eared sliders eat crayfish, tadpoles, aquatic insects and numerous aquatic plant species, among many other food sources. This cesspool has dried up considerably over the summer weeks but remains rich in prime food sources for the turtles, as you can see later on in the video. Notice how all the tadpoles in the cesspool are nowhere to be seen when the turtle is floating on the surface.
