The Comica CVM-D30 is an affordable shotgun microphone that can be used on DSLRs and other cameras and recording devices with a 3.5mm input. It’s comparable to the Rode VideoMic Pro but a lot more affordable. The design is pretty simplistic and has a unique looking anti-shock mount. This is a consumer level microphone using a 3.5mm plug for the connection. In this video, I’m testing it on my Canon 7D.

The bottom of the mic connects to the camera with a hot shoe mount. On the bottom there’s also a quarter twenty mounting hole for tripods. The Comica D30 slips onto the hot shoe smoothly but the securing ring feels like cheap plastic. But even so, the ring holds the mic securely to the top of the camera. And overall, the construction of the D30 feels a bit cheap because of all the plastic but keep in mind this shotgun microphone only priced at $60.

At that price, Comica still includes a large dead cat windscreen in the package as they do with all their mics. To use the dead cat, the foam wind screen has to be removed and then the dead cat slips over the microphone and shock mount. The dead cat was actually kind of difficult to get on. If there was some elastic around the openings, it would’ve made it a lot easier to slip on. On the back, it has features similar to the Rode VideoMic Pro including a high-pass filter and 10 dB gain to boost the signal.

The Comica V30 uses two AAA batteries for power but often I forget to turn off the mic when done so it’s a good idea to keep an extra set of batteries around. This is a really affordable directional shotgun mic to capture better audio when subjects are directly in front of the camera.
