Microsoft Excel Tutorial: How to Fill Empty Excel Cells with Value from Above.

Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this video, we will continue our journey through a data set that needs some formatting before we can create a pivot table. Yesterday, we separated the model information from Column B out to Column A. Now, we need to fill in the blank cells with the corresponding region for each row.

Luckily, there is a simple solution for this. We will use the "Go To Special" function to select all of the blank cells. In Excel 2007, you can access this by using the "Find and Select" option, while in Excel 2003, it can be found under "Edit" and then "Go To". Once we have selected the blank cells, we can use a simple formula to fill in the cells with the correct region. Just type an equal sign, press the up arrow, and then use "Ctrl + Enter" to fill in all of the cells at once.

However, we are not done yet. We still need to convert these formulas to values in order to use them in our pivot table. Since we have a non-contiguous range selected, we cannot simply copy and paste values. Instead, we will need to re-select the data and then use "Ctrl + C" to copy and "Ctrl + V" to paste values. This will convert the formulas to values, and we can now move on to the next step.
