Microsoft Excel Tutorial: How to Display Words with Dates in Excel Using Custom Number Formatting | MrExcel Podcast.

Welcome to the MrExcel podcast. In this episode, we will be discussing words with dates. I'm Bill Jelen and today's question comes from a viewer on YouTube who is looking for a way to calculate a cell based on a date in another cell. Instead of using complicated functions, I have a simple solution that involves custom number formatting.

On the second worksheet, I have entered a date in cell A1 and formatted it as a custom number with the words "payroll as of" before the date. This way, the cell still contains a true date value, but it is displayed as a phrase. To do this, I went to the home tab and clicked on the format cells dialog launcher, or you can use the shortcut [ctrl 1]. Then, I selected the custom number format and added the words "payroll as of" in quotes before the format. This will show the words before the date in the cell.

Now, to calculate the cell A8 based on the date in A1, we can simply use the formula =A1+14. This will add 14 days to the date in A1, giving us the next payroll date. We can then copy this formula down for each additional payroll period. This way, we are able to store a real date value in the cell, but display it as a phrase using custom number formatting.
