#2 and #10 from '24 Romances sans paroles' (1850s) -------------------------------------------------------- The Spanish composer Marcial del Adalid y Gurréa (1826-1881) studied in London with Moscheles from 1840-4, and later met Liszt in Paris. Returning to Spain (La Coruña and Madrid), he composed songs - including settings of Galician folk songs - and piano music (including three sonatas). An unfinished opera had to wait until 2007 for its premiere. I am not sure exactly when the set of 24 songs without words from which this piece comes were published - but I guess that, as they were published in Paris and dedicated to French people, as well as family and friends, they would date from the late 1850s, following the composer's return to Spain via Paris. In these pieces, Adalid adds an attractive Spanish touch to a genre derived from Mendelssohn's books of 'Lieder ohne Worte'. Like Mendelssohn, he included barcarolles in his set, and the two pieces were dedicated to his daughters: Marie (to whom he also dedicated a set of 12 pieces called 'Enfantillages', and Fanny.
