The Viennese composer and pianist Hugo Reinhold (1854-1935) studied under Bruckner, amongst others, and wrote orchestral, chamber and piano music, and songs. He is remembered for an Impromptu (from Op.28) which is popular with piano students. This piece comes from a collection published in 1884, which I assume are not intended to be played in sequence. All the pieces show a slightly Germanic take on forms popularized by Chopin (and indeed the accompaniments to the Nocturne and Wiegenlied in places echo Chopin's iconic Berceuse). This barcarolle intriguingly seems to combine the generic Venetian gondola song style with contrasting sections in mazurka rhythm. The pieces are dedicated to 'Paula', whom I presume to be Reinhold's wife, or a family member.
