HOTS stands for High order thinking skill. These questions are coming in the large number in the Board Exams, especially CBSE. One such problem appeared in the 2016 CBSE board Maths exam 2016. If we go step by step, this problem can be solved without any difficulty. Following are the steps.
First- Try to understand the question. The perimeter of the shaded region has been asked and not the area. So, there should be no confusion about this. Since the perimeter is asked, we have to be concerned about the length of the figure enclosing the shaded region.
Second Step- Perimeter is divided into three parts- AB, PB and arc length PA. We have to separately find these lengths.
Third Step- For finding AB, trigonometry in the triangle BAO is required using tangent formula. Similarly, using secant formula, the PB can be found. For arc length PA, we have to use the arc length formula.
Fourth Step- Finally, all the lengths have to be added to get the required perimeter.
