Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Excel 2007 offers a cool trick to replace Freeze Panes. Episode 1094 shows you how.

Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this episode, we're going to tackle a common problem faced by Excel users - how to analyze massive amounts of data without losing track of the headings. But don't worry, I've got a solution for you that will make your life a lot easier.

First, we'll start by firing up a pivot table. This is a great tool for analyzing large data sets, but it can be frustrating when you have to constantly scroll back up to see the headings. That's where our trick comes in - automatic freeze panes. And the best part? It's only available in Excel 2007 and newer versions.

In previous versions of Excel, we had to use the freeze panes feature to keep the headings visible. But in Excel 2007, all you have to do is define your data as a table. You can do this by selecting your data and pressing [Ctrl + T] or by going to the Home tab and clicking on "Format as Table". This not only makes your data look more organized, but it also has some great features that we'll explore in future episodes.

Now, as you scroll down through your data, you'll notice that the headings in Row 1 automatically move up and replace the A through H labels. No more losing track of your headings! And if you're like me and don't like the auto filter drop downs taking up space, you can easily turn them off.

But that's not all - using a table also has the added benefit of automatically filling in formulas. So, if you have a formula in one cell, it will automatically copy down as you add more rows to your table. This is a huge time saver and makes working with large data sets a breeze.

So, there you have it - automatic freeze panes in Excel 2007. Say goodbye to constantly scrolling back up to see your headings and never worry about freeze panes again.
