Microsoft Excel Tutorial - Several Ways to Round 0.3333 and Have the Total be Correct.

Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast, where we tackle all your Excel questions and problems. 

Enter 1/3 in three cells and total. Why is it 99 cents instead of a dollar?

Our viewer, Michael, has a question about rounding and why his formula is not adding up to the expected amount. We can see that he has entered the formula =1/3 and formatted the cells as currency, but the total is not adding up to $0.99. This is because Excel is storing the value as .3333333, which is why we are getting $0.33 instead of $0.99.

To solve this issue, we have two options. The first option is to use the ROUND function in our formula. By using ROUND(1/3,2), we are telling Excel to round the value to two decimal places, giving us the desired result of $0.99. The second option is to go into Excel Options and select "Set precision as displayed" under the Advanced tab. However, be cautious when using this option as it can permanently lose accuracy in your entire workbook.

I personally prefer using the ROUND function as it gives me more control over the rounding process. But it's always good to know about different options and choose the one that works best for your specific situation.
