Microsoft Excel Tutorial: How to Change Text To Upper or Lower Case in Excel.

Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In today's episode, we have a question from Gary in England about changing text from uppercase to lowercase and vice versa. If you have a question for the podcast, please leave a voicemail or email and we'll address it in a future episode.

There are three useful functions in Excel that can help with this task. In column A, I have data that is all uppercase. In column B, I will use the LOWER function, =LOWER(A1), to convert the text to lowercase. Simply double click the fill handle to apply the formula to all cells in the column. This is a quick and easy way to change the case of your text.

On the other hand, if you want to convert lowercase text to uppercase, you can use the UPPER function, =UPPER(B1). This will capitalize all letters in the text. Another interesting function is the PROPER function, which is great for converting names to proper case. For example, if we have "Bill Jelen" in cell D1 and use =PROPER(D1), it will capitalize the first letter of each word.

Now, you may be wondering how to change the text in column A from uppercase to lowercase without using a formula. Well, you can simply copy the formula and paste special values. To do this, select the formula, right click on the border, drag it to the new location, and select "copy here as Values Only". This will replace the original values in the column with the new values from the formula. Then, you can delete the extra formulas.

And there you have it! The UPPER, LOWER, and PROPER functions are great tools for converting the case of your text in Excel. Thanks for tuning in to this netcast from MrExcel. Don't forget to leave your questions for future episodes and we'll see you next time!
