Here's a behavior I hadn't seen before...   Even though the air temperature wasn't terribly warm (perhaps 75F), the mother bird must have felt that too much direct sunlight wasn't a good idea for her nest and decided to provide some shade using her own body as an umbrella. As the sunlight illuminates her wide-spread tail fan, the colors and pattern become brilliantly obvious in these close-up, high definition shots.

The sunlight hits the nest like this for only about 30 minutes per day, and since the sun rises higher in the sky each day, it may soon not hit the nest at all so this colorful plumage display may be a short-lived and somewhat rare treat.
