Abert's Towhees prefer desert riparian habitats. This is hot, dry chaparral in San Diego very close to the riparian habitat of the Penasquitos Creek. The Abert's Towhee is said to have one of the smallest distribution ranges of all birds in North America, even though it is not threatened as a species. Technically according to the range map Abert's Towhees aren't even supposed to be in San Diego, but there they are. The appearance of Abert's Towhees varies, but these two match some of the photos I've seen online exactly.
