The Turkish-Australian composer Albert Arlen (born Albert Aarons (1905-93)) is best known for his Alamein Concerto, inspired by his experience as a wartime RAF pilot. He was also as a composer of musicals, premiered in Australia. This curious piece, published in 1946, seems to hark back to 'Ol' Man River' in its dramatic introduction, and in general to a pre-swing era - I suspect it might have been written in the early 1930s. The piano writing is fairly unsophisticated, so I wonder if this may be an uncredited arrangement of an orchestral work.
