As expected, the approval of new high-tech radar cameras for the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office was voted down by the Hamilton County Commission Wednesday morning.Initially the Commission approved the use of the new LIDAR cameras by a vote of 5-4. However after some public protest, two commissioners -- Larry Henry and Chester Bankston -- brought the issue back up and changed their votes to No. The 
LIDAR system is essentially a camera attached to a radar gun. If 
they detect a speeder it is recorded and the owner of the car is issued a
 $50 citation by mail, without an officer conducting a traffic stop. Eight commissioners voted against the radar equipment. One reason raised by commissioner Joe Graham and Henry was the.$12.75 from each ticket that would go towards a teen driver training program. They called that amount far too little to support the amount of teenagers eligible for such a program. Commissioner Tim Boyd spoke out against LIDAR as well saying the $50 ticket and lack of points added to your license for speeding was hardly a deterrent to motorists. Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Hammond spoke with News Channel 9 after the vote Wednesday morning. He said his job is to keep the people in the county safe, and that it's up to the commission to tell me what equipment I can use.
