Microsoft Excel Tutorial - Mastering Excel's Fill Handle: Data Entry and Extending Data Series Tips!

Welcome to the latest episode of the Learn Excel netcast! I'm your host, Bill Jelen, and today we have a special guest joining us at The Museum of Flight. Curtis Frye, from thatexcelguy.com and author of Microsoft Excel 2007 Step by Step, is here to share some valuable tips on data entry and extending data series using the fill handle.

Have you ever needed to quickly enter a series of data, such as months or numbers? Curtis shows us a handy trick to do just that. By simply dragging the fill handle in the lower right corner of the active cell, you can easily fill in the rest of the series. But did you know that you can also use the fill handle to repeat a value? Just hold down the control key and hover over the fill handle to see the cursor change to a black crosshair with a smaller black crosshair. This secondary behavior allows you to repeat the value as many times as you need.

But that's not all the fill handle can do. Curtis also demonstrates how to extend a data series using linear regression. This is especially useful when creating charts and trendlines. By selecting all the cells containing the values and dragging the fill handle, Excel will automatically fill in the rest of the series based on the best progression it can determine. This can save you a lot of time and effort, so make sure to take advantage of this feature.

I hope you enjoyed this tip from Curtis Frye and learned something new about the fill handle. Don't forget to tune in tomorrow for another episode of the Learn Excel netcast with MrExcel.
