CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A new Ohio law in effect Monday could impact your daily commute. The "Slow Down to Get Around" law was signed at the beginning of August. It states that if you come upon a trash-collecting vehicle, you must proceed with caution and change lanes if traveling on a roadway with more than two lanes. The rules are the same as those for emergency vehicles on the side of the road. Earlier in 2018, a Rumpke employee was hit and killed by a driver. This new law will hopefully help prevent tragedies like that from happening in the future. "Being struck by a motorist is one of the leading causes of death for waste collection and sanitation workers, so we really want to make sure drivers are aware of any and every thing they can do not only protect themselves while driving, but to protect everyone else who's out there on the road," said Jennifer Moore from AAA. "It's absolutely all about safety. Garbage truck drivers have a very tough job. It's a very dangerous job. They're crossing the road to pick up trash. They provide an essential service to so many people, and we just want to make sure we're protecting them in every way," said Molly Yeager from Rumpke. This is a law that's already been adopted in 18 other states, including Kentucky and Indiana. If you violate the new law, you could be charged with a minor misdemeanor moving violation along with a fine of up to $300.
