CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- With a rise in crime near the University of Cincinnati, a program to get students in the area around campus expands. The popularity of the UC NightRide program has grown significantly since its expansion this year. Here are the numbers from January. 3,200 runs, 7,000 students, 64 hundred miles around campus, all just to make sure students get home safely. Compare that to 2,100 runs total in 2013.University of Cincinnati police officer Jim Vestring, who runs the program, says its all about keeping students safe. We get monthly stats of where our so called target areas are and that's where i tell my people, the employees working for me, that we make sure we stay in that area so that nobody's walking around after dark and become a victim of crime. The program is free to students and runs seven days a week. Riders must show their UC identification card. Students can also bring along a guest that does not attend the university.
