An inmate in Hamilton County is back in custody Tuesday morning after authorities tell us he escaped from custody and stole a Hamilton County Department of Public Works van.

"It was just kind of one of those moments where you just are a little bit bewildered," said Anna Carll.

Carll lives across the street from where the wreck happened.

"I heard speeding vehicles and I thought, uh oh, something is up," said Carll.

Behind the wheel of the van, Dontrail Tucker, 20, an inmate at the Silverdale Corrections Facility.

"The look on his face was one of panic," said Carll.

According to a police report, Tucker stole the van while working a prison detail near the McDonalds on Highway 153.
He took off, leading police on a chase towards the center of the city.

"I looked out the window and saw this van had crashed into a retaining wall of my neighbor across the street," said Carll.

Court documents show Tucker was in jail for a failure to appear charge after being arrested for marijuana possession.
According to the police report, Tucker told them he took the van because the jail had messed up on the date of his release.

Tucker's ride came to an abrupt end at the corner of Holly St. and South Chamberlain Avenue.

"A young man had jumped out in orange clothing and was running down the street," said Carll, "about 10 police cars came screaming around the corner."

Police caught up with Tucker less than a block away.
He was put in the back of a police car and taken to jail.

Tucker is charged with escape, theft of property, evading arrest, and driving on a revoked license. He is currently in jail without bond.
