Road Safety: Stiff penalties ahead following passage of bill

School children are some of the most vulnerable road users This vulnerability was exposed by a pilot study that focused on selected schools in Naivasha and Thika . Globally road accidents are the leading cause of death among young people aged between 15 and 29 years, according to the World Health Organisation. In Kenya road safety programs that target school children have been and continue to be introduced.The National Transport and Safety Authority has developed a Bill that is now awaiting amendments that will see stiffer penalties for those flouting traffic rules especially those involving school transport. The amendment to the traffic bill will also see motorists compelled to maintain a 30km/h speed limit around school locations and vehicles engaged in school transport subjected to a thorough inspection to ensure they are compliant.
