Following the success of his symphonic ode 'Le Désert', in 1842, the composer Félicien-César David (1810--76) was once considered a major force in French music. However, none of his operas or other works enjoyed the same posthumous fame - although he is reasonably well represented on recordings. Some of his music shows Middle-Eastern influences - this mild exoticism was perhaps gained in the 1830s when he visited the Middle East with other disciples of the Saint-Simonian movement. This was a French political and social movement which also attracted the attention of Berlioz and Liszt. A viewer informs me that this arrangement is of the first chorus from 'Le Désert'.

The Irish composer Vincent Wallace (1812-65) was one of the best-travelled musicians of his time - emigrating to Australia, and voyaging through the South Seas, and in north and south America - becoming a US citizen in 1850. He is remembered particularly for his operas, but was also a considerable pianist and organist.  This majestic arrangement was published posthumously.
