Louis James Alfred Lefébure-Wély (1817–69) was a celebrated French organist who started playing in public at the age of 8 (how could he have reached the pedals?). He is best known today for his popular organ 'Sortie', but his piano piece 'Les Cloches du Monastére' (The Monastery Bells) was once extremely popular.  The set of studies from which this is taken is a forgotten masterpiece, full of gems.  Many of the movements almost play like condensed exercises in the sort of writing Verdi used in his much later requiem, and one can see how Verdi must have been influenced by French models, and the later works of Rossini (who lived in Paris).  This set of studies was published around 1860 and dedicated to the memory of Pierre Zimmerman (1785–1853), Lefébure-Wély's friend, and former teacher at the Paris Conservatoire.  Although this study may at first sight look generic, it is so well-written and subtly balanced within the piano's register that is somehow compelling to play.
