Microsoft Excel Tutorial:  Speed up Excel Calculation Time with this Simple Tip.

Welcome back to another MrExcel netcast! In today's video, we have a great tip sent in by John Cassetti. John's tip is perfect for those dealing with large spreadsheets. He has a spreadsheet with 20,000 rows of data, all using IF formulas. As you can imagine, the recalculation time for this is just horrendous. John's solution? Turning off automatic calculation. You can do this by going to Tools, Options, and then selecting the Calculation tab. Set it to manual mode and then you can use the F9 key to recalculate the entire worksheet when needed.

But what if you don't want to constantly recalculate the entire spreadsheet? John has a brilliant solution for that too. Instead of using the F9 key, you can select the range of cells that you want to calculate and then go to Edit, Replace. Here, you can ask Excel to replace every equal sign with an equal sign. Make sure to turn off the options for match case and match entire cell contents. This will allow Excel to only calculate the selected cells, saving you a significant amount of time.
