#1 from 'Album di 10 pezzi pianistici per la gioventù' (publ. 1943) ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Italian composer Francesco Cilèa (1866-1950) was born in Palmi, near Reggio di Calabria, and studied at the Naples Conservatory. He is best known as an opera composer, and 'Adriana Lecouvreur' and 'L'Arlesiana' are still international repertoire pieces. He also wrote orchestral, chamber and piano music. This piece comes from an album of 10 piano pieces for the young - although the technical demands, large chords and use of octaves indicate that they are intended for advanced young performers, or maybe for adults looking back at childhood (as with Schumann's 'Kinderscenen'). This piece in particular has octave passages and rapid arpeggios which do not suggest an educational work.
