Police are still looking for the suspect of a deadly hit and run that happened in Rossville over the weekend.

A man in a wheelchair was hit and killed by a driver on a neighborhood road.

"It sounded like somebody ran into a brick wall at a very hard speed," said Amanda Snyder, who lives nearby.

Snyder was on a porch not far from the intersection of Indian Ave and Cedar St when the wreck happened.

"I dropped everything I had in my hands and I ran up the street to him," said Snyder.

She says she tried to stop the man from bleeding and give the paramedics a chance to save his life.

"I got down beside him and I was trying to talk to him and keep him conscience," said Snyder.

Michael Burns died at the scene. Police with the Georgia State Patrol say he was heading North on Indian Ave in his electric wheel chair. A car heading southbound hit him.

"[He] just run over him," said Sgt. James McConathy, with the Georgia State Patrol, "there was no indication of swerving or dodging."

He says the car never stopped before hitting Burns.

"The wheelchair was struck at an angle that suggests he was trying to get out of the cars way, but impact knocked him out of the wheelchair and on to the side of the road.," said McConathy.

McConathy says the evidence at the scene and witness statements show the person behind the wheel took off.

"There was a couple of witnesses who were standing there and when he stopped and started to take off, they're yelling "stop, stop,"" said McConathy.

He says the wreck could have been avoided.

"The road is wide enough that the vehicle should have seen him and should have went around him."

"He would just ride up to the store and do what he does," said Snyder, describing Burns, "he wasn't causing no harm."

Snyder says she spent much of the weekend crying, trying to make sense of what she witnessed.

"Completely disgusted," said Snyder, "I mean, that's the only thing I can feel about it now."

Police are looking for a small car that is white or silver with Tennessee tags. The car will also have significant damage to the front end.
