"I need to be in love" was a single off the Carpenters 1976 LP "A Kind of Hush". It was not one of their bigger hits, far from it, but i believe it is one of the most beautiful that they ever recorded. The songwriter John Bettis certainly thought so, and has commented that the lyric was tailor made for Karen. 

The death of Karen Carpenter in February of 1983 is one of the worst celebrity losses in my lifetime. Maybe it was her age, the suddeness of it, the shocking way her anorexia had brought about her premature death, and that exquisite voice that would never record again, and that vulnerable sweet spirit that she carried, that was extinguished all those years ago. 

Many famous people have died before their time, hers seems particularly tragic, and this song "I need to be in love" highlights that grief and loss. It is a heartfelt and naked vocal performance. Trademark Karen Carpenter.
