Ashtanga Yoga teacher Maria Boox recollects her meetings with Guru BKS Iyengar whom she first met in 1995 when she went to Pune and practiced at the center. Maria often met Guruji in the library where she would spend her time reading the sutras and the Bhagavad-Gita. Maria found him very friendly; he answered her questions and shared what he knew. She was a dedicated student and learnt a lot during the year that she was there. She was a schoolteacher back home and when it was time for her to return, Guruji gave her her certificate, saying she should go back and teach. “Do you want me to teach children?” “No, you go home and teach everyone, you’ve been a very good student!” Guruji was aware that Maria was dedicated in her yoga practice and study. Although it was wonderful to be close to Guru BKS Iyengar, Maria went to Guru Pattabhi Jois on her next trip to India, who she found to be more approachable and with whom she shared a special bond.
