UC hosts Playdate with the Bearcats to support kids with cancer

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Sunday is the Seventh Annual Playdate with the Bearcats supporting Mitch's Mission.

You may remember the special bond between Mitch Stone and the UC Bearcats football team when Mitch was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2009.

He was just 11 years old.

He became a little brother to them. They cheered him on through chemo treatments and his stay at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Mitch inspired them and that year the Bearcats ended the season 12-0 with a trip to the Sugar Bowl.

Mitch is now cancer free and a sophomore at UC.

Through his non-profit, kids with cancer or blood diseases get to go to Camp Joy for two weeks in the summer.

They are all patients at Cincinnati Children's Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute.

One hundred patients and a sibling get to go.

Since the beginning, they have raised more than $90,000 to send kids to camp.

Mitch is grateful to be able to give back to kids who are fighting similar battles he fought himself.

"When I was staying in the hospital, I would get text messages from the guys, the football players, you know, seeing how I was doing and they basically had my back," Mitch said. "They were just supporting me throughout that whole entire journey and I'm just... I don't know if I would be able to do it without them honestly."

There will be games, swimming, a rock wall, food, raffles, and you can hang out with athletes.

Playdate with the Bearcats is on Sunday from 2-5 pm at UC's rec center on campus.

The cost is $20 per person or $60 for a family of four.
