Nearly 1/3 of the people on the planet are considered overweight or obese. Researchers with the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington say there doesn't appear to be a decline in sight.

"This has become one of the, if not the, foremost health problem in the world today," said Dr. Todd Rudolph, the Medical Director with Doctor's Express off Gun barrel Rd.

"The formula is simple. We have to burn more calories than we take in," said Rudolph.

He's not surprised by the IHME study.

"It breaks you down. It just makes it so much harder. It makes it harder to breath and it contributes to so many other illnesses," said Rudolph.

He says the expanding waistlines in America may be perpetuated by our lounging lifestyles.

"All this technology allows you to sit on the couch and play your games. Sit on your computer," said Rudolph.

Fitness Professionals see fast food convenience and lack of knowledge as another contributor to bulging bellies.

"People aren't really aware what they are putting in their body," said Tyler Watson, a manager and trainer at Fitness Together on Gunbarrel Road.

He says structure and planning goes a long way to creating a healthy lifestyle.

"We're trying to track our carbohydrates, our fat, and our protein intake," said Watson.

Rudolph says while the individual must make smarter choices, support is essential to achieving a healthy weight.

"We can help remove that stigma by encouraging people. Just say something nice," said Rudolph.
