Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Master Excel: Upgrade Tips, Features, and Running Excel 2003 Side-by-Side. Welcome to the MrExcel netcast! I'm Bill Jelen and today we're talking about the highly anticipated release of Excel 2007. CompUSA opened at midnight last night to sell copies of the new Office, and I'm sure many of you are eager to upgrade. But before you do, I have a suggestion for you. If you're scheduled for an upgrade in 2014, why not try out Excel 2007 now? With so many different versions of Office available, it can be overwhelming to figure out which one to get. But if you're primarily interested in Excel, I recommend the Microsoft Home and Student 2007 version. Not only does it give you Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, but it also includes a great new program called OneNote. OneNote is like a huge notebook where you can organize your thoughts, to-do lists, and reminders. You can even insert screen clippings from the web or capture audio and video. And the best part? You can run this version of Excel side-by-side with Excel 2003. So if you're used to the older version at work, you can still have it available when needed, but also have the added features of Excel 2007 at your fingertips. The Home and Student edition is currently selling for $129 on Amazon, which is only $20 more than the stand-alone Excel 2007 upgrade. However, there are a few things to watch out for when running these versions side-by-side. If you use VBA and ADO, or if you have a macro that creates a chart and exports it as a graphic, you may run into some minor issues. But for the most part, this is a great way to get your feet wet with Excel 2007, even if your IT department isn't planning on upgrading you anytime soon. Now, if you did happen to upgrade today, here's a quick tip for you. When you first install Excel 2007, you'll notice a flashing icon in the upper left-hand corner. This is where all the important functions like New, Open, Print, and Save are hidden. It's a bit confusing since the word "file" has been removed from the icon, but just remember to click on it and you'll have access to all the essential features.
