Two ornamental apple trees in Botley, Christmas day 2009

The first of these trees has been pruned in the topiary style. Some people like the shape this produces, but its no good for fruiting. Clearly the tree is loved, as there is a bird feeder hanging in it and a bench under it where the owners can sit and look at the collection of ornamental garden gnomes, including Laurel and Hardy plaster figures, around their garden pond. The other tree is an ornamental crab apple, I don't know the variety, but it is a great pleasure to walk by it. It carries a beautiful profusion of tiny red apples which hang all winter. The tree is largely left to itself and as a result has a very natural shape and fruits heavily. Now if you were a songbird, which tree would you prefer to feed in? Happy Christmas to all
