Microsoft Excel Tutorial - Excel Pie Chart Label Color Bug & Possible Solutions.

Welcome to another episode of the MrExcel netcast, where we tackle all your Excel questions and challenges. I'm Bill Jelen, and today we have a question from Wang that has stumped me all day. Wang has discovered something quite unusual and I have to congratulate him for his tenacity in finding this issue.

Wang's question is about data labels in a pie chart. He wanted to change the font color of one label to red, which is a cool feature not many people know about. However, when he updated the value of that label, the font color remained static and did not change with the updated value. This is because once you manually update a label, it becomes static and will not automatically update.

In Excel 2003, there was a feature called AutoFormat or AutoText that could reset the label text and fix this issue. However, in Excel 2007 and 2010, this feature is no longer available. I tried using the macro recorder to find a solution, but unfortunately, it does not work in Excel 2007 and gives incorrect code in Excel 2010.

I have reported this bug to Microsoft and hopefully, it will be fixed in future versions. In the meantime, if anyone has a solution for Wang's problem, please email me at [email protected] and we'll feature it on the podcast.

Wang asks how to change part of one data label to be red. Unfortunately, the label is then broken. A macro should solve this, but it does not. Episode 1147 discusses this problem.
