#1 from Bagatelles, Op.85 ---------------------------------------- The Austrian composer Henri Herz (1803-88) was one of the foremost travelling piano virtuosi of the first part of the 19th century. His compositions were very popular in the salons and drawing-rooms of Europe and the Americas. This short set of variations (preceded by an introduction). The underlying Swiss melody - 'The Shepherdess from Valais' - may be taken from a popular tyrolienne by the French composer, and Salieri pupil, Auguste Mathieu Panseron (1796-1859).
