Microsoft Excel Tutorial - Conditional Formatting (feat. Zack Barresse).

Welcome to another episode of the MrExcel netcast. I'm your host, Bill Jelen, and today we have a special guest, Zach Barresse, who is not only a member of the MrExcel board, but also a firefighter and EMT. He's here to share a cool trick with us using Conditional Formatting in Excel.

As you can see on the screen, we have a table with data and we want to highlight every other row. Instead of manually formatting each row, we can use a formula in Conditional Formatting. We will use the MOD function, which takes two conditions. The first condition is the formula we want to apply, and the second condition is when we want that formula to be true. In this case, we want to highlight every row where the MOD function equals zero.

The beauty of using a formula in Conditional Formatting is that it is a dynamic formula. This means that if you insert or delete a row, the formatting will adjust accordingly. So even if you add more data to your table, the formatting will still highlight every other row. And if you want to highlight every odd row, you can simply change the equal sign in the formula to 1.

Now, let's talk about the ROW function. This function, when used without any parameters, will return the current row of the cell it is in. So if we put the ROW function in cell D1, it will return the number 2, since it is in the second row. And the best part is, this is a dynamic formula as well. So if you fill it down, it will adjust to the current row, and if you insert or delete a row, it will update accordingly.
