CINCINNATI (Perry Schaible) -- Friday marks the tenth year for the "Go Red for Women" movement in Cincinnati. It's a national effort that has made a big local impact.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women. It's also a disease that can be preventable.

Anita Smith got the message.

Seven years ago she ended up in the emergency with a scare. The doctor told Smith she had to make some changes to avoid a stroke.

She did. Smith committed to making better choices, eventually losing 60 pounds.

She says "Wear Red Day" is a day to remind women there is a choice.

"All the things that were hurting me, I could fix," Smith said. "They were things we could change and American Heart Association helped me do that. And, if wearing red this day can help me say 'this is my starting point day, I'm going to do it' then I hope that's what they get out of today."

The "Go Red for Women" movement has led to a 32-percent decrease in cardiovascular disease deaths and saves 300 lives a day.

"Go Red" will hold a free event at the Macy's store in Kenwood Saturday. Heart-healthy stations will be set up from 2 to 4 p.m.

There will be a place to get your blood pressure and BMI checked, a dietician will be on hand, there will be an exercise station and a spot in the makeup department to help ladies feel beautiful on the outside.

Also tying in with the national "Wear Red Day," some stores in Bellevue are offering you an opportunity to save money while shopping on Friday just by wearing red.

From 5 to 9 Friday night, different businesses along Fairfield Avenue will be offering deals just for shoppers in red.

You'll also be able to pick up a heart-friendly recipe at each business and make them into a book at a binding station.
