DAYTON -- A memorial outside Klonda Richey's home continues to grow. The 57-year-old was mauled to death by two dogs on Friday outside her East Bruce Avenue home. She was very afraid of those dogs, said neighbor Greta Parks. She just knew that it seems so ironic that something like that should happen to her and I just feel so bad for her and her family.Parks says she only saw the aftermath of the attack, but says it is taking its toll on the neighborhood. Since Friday it's just been a daze, she said. Just sadness, grief for her and her family.Andrew Nason and Julie Custer, identified by police as the dogs' owners, were originally held on a charge of reckless homicide. They were released by police Sunday night. A neighbor called 911 around 8:15 Friday morning with a report of a body on the sidewalk. She said the body was face down and naked. When Dayton Police officers arrived on scene, they found the woman's body on the sidewalk. Dayton Police say the mastiff mixes then charged the officers, so they then shot and killed both dogs in the area that were suspected to have attacked the woman.Police say they obtained a warrant for 35 E. Bruce Ave., where they arrested Nason and Custer Friday afternoon. Dayton Police and the Animal Resource Center confirmed there have been other concerns about these dogs at this location. We've had complaints in the past, our office has been out here on several occasions and in an attempt to contact the owners to resolve those complaints without success, says ARC Director Mark Kumpf. ARC agents say the Richey had more than a dozen cats in her home, all apparently fed and cared for.Everyone in the neighborhood called her the cat lady, Parks added, And I just wonder if the coat she had on had the smell of the cats on it and maybe that might have been the trigger. The agents spent most of the afternoon removing the cats from the home; and some of the Richey's co-workers have already volunteered to adopt them in her honor.I don't know what to do, Parks said. You know you want to do something but you can't think what it is you could do.
