Lords of Waterdeep Explained in Under 5 Minutes — One of My Favorite Board Games!

Welcome back, board gamers! In this video I'm taking a quick look at Lords of Waterdeep, one of my favorite games to get onto the table when I want something strategic without having to spend forever explaining the rules.

The idea behind the game is pretty straightforward. You choose your color, take your agents, and send them around Waterdeep collecting the resources you need to complete quests. Finish a quest, collect the rewards, score your victory points, and start working toward the next one.

But there's a lot more strategy hiding underneath that simple system.

Every player also has a secret Lord of Waterdeep, and that can completely change which quests you should be chasing. If your Lord gives you bonus points for certain types of quests, you want to build your strategy around collecting and completing as many of those as possible before the game ends.

Then you've got buildings. Purchase a building, put your ownership marker on it, and other players can use it—but you can receive a benefit whenever they do. As more buildings appear, the board starts changing and new opportunities become available.

I also go over Intrigue Cards and Waterdeep Harbor, including how agents placed at the Harbor get another placement after the Intrigue Cards are resolved. It's a great little mechanic that can give you another opportunity to get the resources you need.

That's what I like about Lords of Waterdeep: the basic mechanics aren't difficult to understand, but there's plenty of strategy once everyone knows what they're doing.

I'm trying something different with these reviews—board games explained in under five minutes. No sitting through a 30- or 40-minute video just to understand what the game is about.
