Decided to make a little motivational speech for success in life and share with you the biggest epiphany I ever had.

What you have now is a result of the compound effect of all the decisions you've made up until now.

Our minds are often clouded by emotion and bias making it hard to see the big picture, or predict these compound effects.

The truth is, neither success or failure can happen overnight.

Both of these require thousands of repetitions, thousands of good or bad decisions that ultimately shapes who you are.

The biggest epiphany in my life happened about 6 years ago.

And at that moment I realized that if I could just improve the decisions I make every day and move the balance more toward the right ones versus the wrong ones I'll be successful.

"But how do you do that?" asked one of my clients while we were having a coaching call.

My answer "It's simple, but hard to do."

So here is what I'm thinking when I'm faced with a decision:

Short-term external pleasure = Long term pain, disappointment in oneself and regret.

Short-term external pain = Long term pleasure, fulfillment and ultimately happiness.

Once I've realized this "paradox of success" it became clear what I needed to do.

The actions that made my uncomfortable in the short term were the key to success.

Things like going to the gym. While lifting heavy weights you literally break down your body on a cellular level.

It's not easy. Just imagining yourself going is sometimes hard.

But you heal. In a few days you recover and now you're stronger.

It's the same with non-physical pain. Sometimes saying a simple "No" to a friend or an acquaintance can be hard.

Someone is offering you a second drink, or a third one or the fourth. You know they don't have the same value system as you.

It's hard to say "No", it feels painful in the moment.

But you know if you do it you'll reinforce your values and your goals.

Not only that, that same person you said "No" to will respect you more in the long term.

Having personal boundaries is one of the keys to success.

But what if you choose instant pleasure, what if you choose to skip the gym and go for that juicy burger with fries down the stress?

You'll definitely get some gratification, but it's not gonna last long. Very soon it's gonna get followed up by the need for more, or in some cases by disappointment that you failed yourself.

So what I'm saying is that you have a choice.

You can pick that instant pleasure that very likely leads to long term pain or you can choose to do that thing that makes you a bit uncomfortable that might lead to long-term success.

And it's definitely not black and white. Some uncomfortable things are not gonna get you anywhere. And some instant gratification might be good for you.

But keep in mind how your next 24 hours will go, what will you do on each day.

Are you spending 90% of your day in your comfort zone, being reactive and seeking instant relief.

Or are you spending the majority of it being proactive, doing the slightly painful thing and moving forward in life.

Think about it, and let me know in the comments below how this resonated with you.
