An integral part of a diet for optimum health is the consumption of fruits, nuts and vegetables in their raw form. Uncooked, raw and ripe fruits and veggies are full of live enzymes, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, fiber and much more. They oxygenate all cells of your body and provide an alkaline environment, allowing your body to fight viruses, bacteria and free radicals that can cause cancer and other diseases. Our bodies also need to have raw foods in order to replenish our reservoir of enzymes. Enzymes are proteins catalysts that generate thousands of different chemical reactions all over your body. It is safe to say that without enzymes, life cannot exist. The enzymes in your body do things like repair tissue, build the blood and help you produce energy, among many other functions. There are 3 types of enzymes: metabolic, digestive and food enzymes. Minerals (such as calcium, magnesium and iron) work at creating thousands of metabolic enzymes, without which, life cannot exist. The digestive enzymes help break down the foods into compounds that your body’s organs can absorb. There are a number of digestive enzymes, for each type of food and each part of the digestive process. Food enzymes on the other hand, are the ones found in live foods (you guessed it: raw fruits and vegetables). Your body has a set amount of enzymes. Think of it as a bank account you were born with. Your body uses them to help you grow. Your body also uses them to break down the foods that you eat, and it relies on good, nutritious foods to produce other enzymes that help you stay healthier, longer. Cooking foods over 118 degrees destroys enzymes. Highly processed and pasteurized foods are completely devoid of enzymes too, and will require a greater amount of those for digestion, which means that your body will have to utilize a larger amount of enzymes from its limited resource in order to help digestion. Because digestion is one of the longest and most complicated processes in the body, when you eat a heavy meal lacking in raw foods, your body uses enzymes that are normally used for other functions (rebuilding, replenishing, detoxifying, healing) to aid in the digestion process, neglecting the rest of your body in the process. On the other hand, when you eat raw foods (which are technically alive and full of enzymes), your body uses the enzymes present in the food for digestion, helping you retain more of your own digestive enzymes and giving your body a chance to use its own for other important tasks. So you see, raw foods must become an integral part of your diet as they provide you with many types of nutrients without striping you off the all-important enzymes, needed for life itself. If you eat meals that do not include raw foods and especially if you are mixing heavy starches with protein, I recommend taking a digestive enzyme before each meal. I take one capsule right before lunch and dinner, to ensure that the digestive process is as smooth as possible.
