The southern bald ibis, Geronticus calvus, is a large black-bodied bird found in open grassland or semi-desert in the mountains of Southern Africa. The face of the southern bald ibis is unfeathered and mostly pink, with the sides from the eye down being white. The two ibises of the Geronticus species (see my northern bald ibis video) have bald faces that differentiate them from other ibises, breed on cliffs rather than trees, and prefer arid lands rather than wetlands. The southern bald ibis breeds colonially on rocks and cliffs. It lays 2-3 eggs per clutch, which are incubated for 3 weeks before hatching. These birds feed on insects, small reptiles, rodents, and small birds. This individual bird was alleviating its boredom by picking up and playing with a dead branch with no apparent aim.
