The French composer and organist Alphonse- Zoe-Charles Renaud de Vilbac (1829-84) went to the Paris Conservatoire at 13 and was a second prizewinner in the 1844 Prix de Rome. He is best known today as an arranger of operatic extracts for piano and harmonium, piano and violin and other combinations. However, he also wrote light operas and a few piano works. The set of studies from which this piece comes formed the final part of a piano method published c1873 - which included 100 studies for two hands and 50 studies for piano duet! This piece is an attractive evocation of a stream, and the straightforward layout is enlivened by some subtle harmonies.
