Constantin  (or Konstantin) von Sternberg  (1852-1924) was born in St Petersburg, but studied first in Leipzig (where his teachers included Reinecke and Moscheles) and then in Berlin (under Kullak).  After holding the position of Court pianist in Mecklenberg for a few years, studying with Liszt in Weimar and Rome, and touring as a pianist in Europe, he moved to the USA in 1886, where he held a teaching position in Atlanta and took American citizenship.  In 1890 he relocated to Philadelphia, where he established the 'Sternberg School of Music'.  He was active as an author and editor: his books include 'Ethics and Esthetics of Piano Playing', and 'Tempo Rubato and other essays'.  He wrote piano (c 200 pieces, championed by his friend Josef Hoffman and Leopold Godowsky), chamber and vocal music.  His influence extended well into the 20th century, as his pupils included George Antheil and Marc Blitzstein.
