Microsoft Excel Tutorial - Sorting a Data Set by Customer Size: Excel Trick the Largest Customer at Top.

Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this video, we'll be discussing a question that came up in one of my Excel seminars - how to sort a large data set by customer, with the largest customer at the top. This may seem like a daunting task, but fear not, because I have an amazing trick to share with you.

First, we'll need to sort the customers in ascending order. To do this, simply click on one cell in the CUSTOMER column and click the AtoZ button. Next, we'll add subtotals by customer. Go to DATA, SUBTOTALS, and select "At each change in customer". Then, choose the SUM function for the REVENUE column and click OK. This will automatically add subtotals for each customer.

Now, here's where the magic happens. Press the number 2 button to show only one line per customer. This will make it easier to see the largest customer at the top. Then, select one cell in the REVENUE column and sort it in descending order. You'll notice that not only the subtotals, but also all of the individual rows, have been sorted. Press the number 3 button to see the largest customer at the top, followed by the rest in descending order.

Once you have the desired result, you can remove the subtotals by going to DATA, SUBTOTALS, and selecting "Remove All". And just like that, you have successfully sorted your data by the largest customer at the top. I hope this trick will save you time and effort in your future Excel projects.
