Microsoft Excel Tutorial:  Never Struggle with Adaptive Menus Again! Learn How to Turn Them Off.

Welcome back to another MrExcel netcast! In today's quick tip, I want to make sure you don't have adaptive menus turned on in your Excel program. Back in the early 2000s, Microsoft thought it would be a good idea to simplify their menu structure by randomly hiding two-thirds of the menu items. As you can imagine, this made it incredibly difficult to learn and navigate Excel.

If you go to a menu item and don't see the entire list, look for a double drop down arrow at the bottom. This means you have adaptive menus turned on. It can be frustrating to only see a few options at a time, especially when they may not be the most useful ones. That's why I believe it's better to see the full menu all the time.

To fix this, go to Tools, Customize and click on the third tab, Options. Here, you'll find two settings that need to be turned on. The first one is "Always show full menus". This will ensure that you see the entire menu at all times. The second one is "Show Standard and Formatting toolbars on two rows". If this is unchecked, you'll notice that your standard toolbar is shortened and you have to click a button to see the rest of the icons. It's better to have both toolbars on two rows so you can always see all the icons.

By following these steps, you'll never have to deal with adaptive menus again. You'll always have access to the full menu and all the icons on your toolbars.
