Mayor Berke Sets Tougher Rules for Non-Profit Funding

Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke is taking steps to make sure that every dime in the city's budget is well-spent

For the 2014-2015 fiscal year, the city will be using a new tool to keep a closer eye on how nonprofits and city departments who get city funding-- use their money.

The Budgeting for Outcomes process began last year, but only involving a small portion of the city's budget. Now, it's being used for the entire budget. It's all to make sure all city funds are properly used. 

We continue to struggle to find additional funding, contributions in the community, typically are down, says Regina McDevitt from the Partnership. 

And that's why Regina McDevitt from Rape Crisis Center in Chattanooga says she'll do all she can --- to prove why the city's funding is needed.

If funding was to be eliminated or significantly eliminated from that program, you would have no Rape Crisis Center in Chattanooga, and then where would people go who were sexually assaulted, says Regina MCDevitt. 

The center gets about $56,000 a year. Effective next fiscal year, all 40 non-profit agencies as well as city departments must prove how their program aligns with Mayor Berke's 5 initiatives: Safer Streets, A growing economy, stronger neighborhoods and families and efficient government.
