Cincinnati Police looking for more women in recruit class

LOWER PRICE HILL, Ohio (WKRC) - Cincinnati's police chief says the city needs to speed up the process of getting new officers on the street.

He's pushing for a recruit class as soon as possible. The department wants diversity, and women are encouraged to apply.

"Why not be a part of something in a group of people who recognize that serving others is greater than serving yourself?" Sgt. Chantia Miller said.

Miller has been on the force for nearly 13 years. One of the things she's done in her career is serve as a mentor for other women in the department and recruits.

Miller said, "Really, we bring the softer side, the nature versus nurture aspect of psychology, and I think just having a balance of that actually allows us to be more effective police officers."

Sgt. Dominic Gulliford is in charge of recruiting for the Cincinnati Police Academy. He says sometimes female recruits have problems with the physical agility test.

"I would say roughly 50 percent of the women do not pass that, and that's something that's extremely difficult," Gulliford said. "One of the things we're trying to do now is give women applicants an opportunity to come and work out with female police officers. We don't want any men in the room. We just want all women so they can build those relationships."

Officer Mandy Vineyard trains officers at the academy and is willing to help recruits who need it.

"A way for applicants to get ready for that is make sure you get out there and run. Start doing sit ups and push ups now," Vineyard said. "We want to make sure that all of our officers succeed and are the best that they can be."

There are potential challenges for any recruit, but to get and keep new officers, the group is ready to help.

"We've got you once you get here. Just get here," Miller said.

Miller also added that the academy will work around medical appointments, child care and schooling issues to help recruits.

Applications must be submitted by Dec. 1.

There's a recruiting event Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Cincinnati Police Academy from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
