UNDATED -- Race relations in America is often a topic of hot debate in the United States, especially when national media outlets devote so much time to stories that highlight the argument. But, there is much more to this issue than headlines.ABC 22 / FOX 45 invites you to take part in a National Town Hall about race relations in America. This town hall wants to ask: What are the challenges? What are the solutions to unity?Join us as we take part in the National Town Hall on Feb. 3. ABC 22/ FOX 45 will live stream the discussions at 7 p.m. on http://www.abc22now.com/.Media Studies Professor Christopher Chambers says that media coverage is biased and no longer about presenting stories and providing a marketplace of ideas.Playing on the passions of others can involve shifting the focus to make the story more interesting with a hero and villain. The trial of George Zimmerman, who was accused of killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, is an example of that.Williams says the media has fanned the flames of racism, by exaggerating rifts when they are rare.According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 93 percent of black murder victims in this country are killed by other blacks, and 84 percent of white murder victims are killed by other whites. You would not know it from the news, however.Young black men and young Latino men are being targeted in every neighborhood in this country: the suspect is described as a black man, or an unarmed black teenager. In the case of Trayvon Martin, he is nearly always referred to as the unarmed black teenager, the court case garnered nearly wall-to-wall coverage on some cable networks. After Zimmerman's trial, a Washington Post poll found 86 percent of African Americans disapproved of his not guilty verdict, while 31 percent of Caucasians disapproved.
