Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Where is Chart Marker Fill in Excel

Welcome to another episode of Where's it Wednesday on the MrExcel netcast! In this video, we'll be discussing a common frustration that many Excel users face when trying to create charts in Excel 2007. Our viewer, Don, has a nice Cluster Chart but is having trouble changing the color of the first series from red to black. Don't worry, we've got you covered with a simple solution.

First, let's take a look at the three tabs in the chart toolbar: Design, Layout, and Format. These tabs go from general settings to specific settings, with the Format tab being the most detailed. To change the color of a specific series, we'll need to select that series from the drop-down menu in the Format or Layout tab. In this case, we'll select the "CENTERS" series and then choose the Shape Fill option to change the color to black.

Another option is to go into Format Selection, which will bring up a dialog box similar to the one in Excel 2003. Here, you can choose a marker style and then change the fill color and line color. However, if you just want to change the color without changing the style, it's best to stick with the first method.

It's important to note that chart formatting has changed significantly in Excel 2007, which can be frustrating for those used to the old version. But with a little bit of practice and some tips from MrExcel, you'll be creating charts like a pro in no time. Thanks for watching and be sure to tune in next time for another netcast on Where's it Wednesday!

While creating a scatter chart, Don is trying to change the marker color in Excel 2007. This was relatively easy to find in Excel 2003. In Excel 2007, the equivalent dialog was split into several panes, but there is a much easier way to go. Episode 988 discusses the three charting tabs and shows you the solution.
