KETTERING -- United States Postal Workers are outside despite the weather this winter, making sure Miami Valley residents get their mail. So what's the best way to look out for your local postal worker? Shovel your sidewalks. They have to walk on the sidewalk they bust their butts, said Dayton resident Rachel Thomas. I think everyone should do the common courtesy and shovel their snowy sidewalks. You have to watch your footing, it slows you down quite a bit. It tires you out, you notice it at the end of the day, US Postal Carrier Jay Perdue said while walking his route. Even after 19 winters on the job, he still walks between 6 and 10 miles per day. He's one of about 600 carriers from thirteen offices in the Miami Valley who's giving letters a lift from house to house. It's been pretty rough, he said. Rough enough that even the seasoned pro can't remember a winter that hit sidewalks so hard. You should have been out here with me yesterday! he said over snowy sidewalks. This year, all the unshoveled walkways from frozen snow are making his job more treacherous. You're breathing harder, fatigued, your legs, your back. Slips, trips, falls, definitely take their toll on you, Perdue said between breaths. So to make sure your mail gets in on time, he has a suggestion for neighbors. If they shovel the sidewalks and shovel the snow off the steps it definitely makes our job easier. But an easy job isn't why he picked this career. Jay says it's the customers that might keep him going, for another 19 winters. I enjoy my job for the most part. I like the customers, I like my route, he said. I feel bad for them, said U.D. student David Tolley, But I also really appreciate everything they do.
